Another good approach is to produce a set of images and put them into a
document with a short explanation of design decisions - to avoid
unnecesary questioning (maybe it could be in the online wiki).
We use this method, I usually do the hw + documentation and the other
guy makes the firmware, supplying a table with the pin functions is also
niceand helps him a lot.
