No.

Future proofing is way overrated.  It will be very easy to change when
(if!) necessary.

Or a program on a PC could do it.  If the communication with the
external EEPROM is slow enough it could even be simulated with a PC and
a few pins from its parallel port.

100Kbit/s should work fine over the parallel port.  All you need is a
cable you are willing to butcher and perhaps a resistor or two if the 5V
of the parallel port is too much for the card to handle (it's only 3.3V,
isn't it?).
