I imagine the IDC Connectors are of the low noise, high bandwidth  
variety designed for 100Mhz+
signals, where as standard .1 inch pitch connectors provide nothing  
near that much signal integrity.

If we are discussing a slightly more expensive high bandwidth  
connector vs low bandwidth cheap
connector, I vote for the high bandwidth. It is always better to have  
development boards be more
flexible than needed, since even though you might not need the  
features somebody else will.
