IIUC from SiliconImages's web site, the complete implementation of HDCP 
is in their transmitter chip.  There is an I2C connection to the chip 
which I presume can turn HDCP on and off.

I don't see right off how this could work with your suggestion unless 
they (or another company) sell pin compatible chips both with and 
without HDCP.
