[Open-graphics] Speech rewrite, per Lourens' suggestions

Here's a complete redo based on Lourens' outline.  My first step was
to just make sense of his outline and put stuff into place.  I have
other things to do for the next several hours, so I can't yet go back
and put more brains into it.  Meanwhile, others can look at it.
