Aside from cost, the main advantages of the Spartan 3 are cost,
cost, and cost.

Virtex 5 is significantly faster, but the price/performance ratio is
significantly worse.  Unless you need the speed in a particular situation
that can't easily done with increased parallelism instead, it's more
cost effective to use multiple Spartan parts rather than one Virtex.
